Excavation and Shoring: The Structural Engineering Hiding Under Every Deep Foundation
Excavation below a few feet requires engineered shoring — sheet piling, soldier piles and lagging, soil nails, tiebacks, secant walls, or underpinning of adjacent structures. OSHA requires specific protective systems. Adjacent structure protection is often the controlling design. Urban excavations combine structural engineering with urban logistics to produce work that has both technical and regulatory complexity. Contractors who handle deep excavation well enable the rest of the project; those who don't produce collapses, injuries, and adjacent-property damage claims.
