California's Dual Remedy: Mechanics Lien vs. Stop Payment Notice (And When to Use Which)
California uniquely offers two independent statutory payment remedies for unpaid construction work: the mechanics lien against the project property, and the stop payment notice against undisbursed construction funds held by the owner or lender. Each has distinct procedures, timing, and outcomes — and a contractor who understands both can often double their leverage over a delinquent payer. Most contractors outside California don't realize the stop payment notice even exists.
